The Neurochemical Contract

The Neurochemical Contract is a working model for how state may shape learning and response.

The Working Model

State Shapes The Conditions For Learning.

The model proposes that when the brain is in survival mode, immediate protection takes priority and the conditions for focused learning are reduced.

The Sovereign approach begins by aiming to help the horse remain relaxed and calm while a movement is requested. This regulated condition is termed the Alpha State.

The Reward Mechanism

The Brain Tags The Movement.

Within this working model, movement requested inside the Alpha State may become associated with reward chemistry within a calm, regulated experience.

The model proposes that this association gives the movement value and may support the horse in choosing the shape again.

State first. Movement second. Reward makes the shape worth choosing.

The Neurochemical Contract is the working model beneath the Sovereign System®. It frames the state in which learning is approached and the proposed connection between requested movement and reward chemistry.
